Strengthening International Physiotherapy Collaboration at SMCCH – November 2025

St. Mary’s Children and Community Hospital (SMCCH), Umuowa, Orlu, continues to advance its rehabilitative services through sustained international collaboration in physiotherapy, in partnership with our German colleague, Ms. Karin Huenteler, a senior . physiotherapist  St Augustine Hospital Bonn Germany. As part of this collaboration, SMCCH holds monthly virtual physiotherapy conferences aimed at reviewing patients, refining treatment strategies, and strengthening professional capacity. These sessions focus particularly on children with neurodevelopmental disorders, for whom the hospital continues to provide subsidized physiotherapy services, ensuring improved access to specialized care for affected families. The most recent session reviewed the progress of three pediatric patients and one adult patient with neurological and musculoskeletal challenges. Clinical discussions centred on tone-regulating techniques to enhance sitting and standing, promotion of independent mobility, appropriate use of assistive and standing devices, upper limb activation in brachial plexus injury, and gait correction in chronic neurological disease. Caregivers were also guided on practical home-based supportive measures. Speaking on  zoom, on the collaboration, Ms. Karin Hünteler noted that “the consistency of these monthly case reviews allows for meaningful clinical progress and shared learning, especially in the management of young children with complex developmental needs.” Similarly, the Head of the Physiotherapy Unit at SMCCH, Mr. Uche Ojobo Samson, stated that “this partnership has significantly strengthened our clinical approach and ensures that our patients benefit from international best practices, despite limited resources.” SMCCH remains committed to sustaining this collaboration, with monthly physiotherapy conferences continuing into 2026, as part of the hospital’s broader mission to deliver compassionate, affordable, and high-quality rehabilitative care to children and adults within our community.
