WORLD BLOOD DONORS DAY 14TH JUNE 2021
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated in all countries of the world every year on June 14.
For 2021, the World Blood Donor Day slogan will be “Give blood and keep the world beating”.
St Mary’s Hospital Umuowa joined the rest of the world to celebrate this day. According to one of our doctors, Dr Fab Emerenini, “You don’t always have to be a doctor to SAVE someone’s LIFE! Donating just a pint (almost 470 ml) of blood will not make much of a difference in your life but that one pint can save up to three lives!”
The head of department of blood banking and haematology , Mls Oby Nkemakolam during a sensitization briefing noted that “ Every two seconds someone needs blood, and donated blood will be replaced in 56 days “. She stated that “Donor will not become “weak” after blood donation as a person has 5 – 6 liters’ of blood in his/her body. One can donate blood every 90 days (3 months).
